Privacy Policy

ChoBo ("ChoBo," "we," "us") makes a household chore-tracking app at getchobo.com. This policy explains what information the app touches, because the honest answer is: less than you'd expect from a typical app. There are no user accounts, no sign-up forms, and no server-side database of your household's chores.

Where your data actually lives

Everything you enter — household members, chores, points, rewards, goals — is stored in your browser's local storage, on your own device. We don't have a server that stores it, can't see it, and can't retrieve it for you if you clear your browser data. If you use the household sync feature (Household or Lifetime plans), your data syncs directly between your own devices over an encrypted peer-to-peer connection (WebRTC) — it still doesn't pass through or get stored on a ChoBo server.

Setting up that peer-to-peer connection does briefly use a third-party signaling service (PeerJS's public broker) to help your devices find each other, the way any WebRTC-based app works. That service sees connection metadata needed to establish the link, not your household's actual chore data.

Photos and your camera

You can attach a photo when you flag something that needs attention. You can also, optionally, attach a reference photo to a chore or a chore template (what needs doing, or what done should look like) and a photo of the finished job once a chore is done. ChoBo never asks your browser for access to your camera. "Take photo" opens your phone's own camera app (and "Choose photo" opens your photo library), and ChoBo only receives the one picture you pick.

Before a photo is used, it's shrunk and re-saved, which removes the hidden information that photos usually carry — including GPS location and details about your device. The photo is stored in your browser on that device, not on a ChoBo server, and we can't see it. If your household uses sync, the photo is sent to your household's other devices over the same encrypted peer-to-peer connection as the rest of your data. When two devices can't connect directly, that connection may be relayed by a third-party service; the photo stays encrypted, so the relay can't read it.

Photos are temporary. Each device deletes a flag's photo shortly after the flag is answered or dismissed, and no later than 48 hours after it was raised. A chore's photos are deleted a week after the chore is finished, or sooner if the chore is deleted or sent back to To Do. A chore template's photo stays until you remove it or delete the template. A device that was offline catches up the next time it syncs. You can turn photos off on any device in Settings, which also deletes any photos stored on that device. Please only photograph things that need doing, like a messy room, and not people without their consent.

Payments

If you upgrade to a paid plan, payment is handled entirely by Stripe. We never see or store your card number. Stripe collects what it needs to process payment (billing email, payment method, etc.) under its own privacy policy, available at stripe.com/privacy. We store a signed license token (proving you paid) in your browser — not a copy of your payment details.

Analytics

We use Vercel Web Analytics to understand aggregate traffic — page views, referring sites, general location (country-level), and device type. It's cookieless and doesn't track you individually across sites. We don't use it, or anything else, to build an advertising profile of you.

We also log a rough, bucketed measure of how long a page stayed open (e.g. "30s–2m," never an exact time) along with which page it was — no cookie, IP address, or other identifier attached. This is stored briefly on our own infrastructure, capped at a fixed number of recent entries, purely so we can see whether the app is actually being used.

Children's privacy

ChoBo is designed for a parent or adult household member to set up and manage — kids don't create accounts, enter contact information, or interact with anything outside the app itself. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children. Any names or avatars entered for household members are chosen by the adult setting up the household and stay on that device (or sync only between that household's own devices). A photo attached to a flag or a chore could show a child or part of your home; as described above, it stays on your household's own devices, we never receive it, and it's deleted on the schedule described in "Photos and your camera".

Your control over your data

Since your data lives on your own device, you control it directly: Settings has options to clear chore history or reset everything, or to turn off photos on that device, and clearing your browser's site data for getchobo.com removes it completely. There's no account to delete because there's no account. Payment records held by Stripe are subject to Stripe's own retention and deletion practices.
